Sitemaps: The First Step to SEO Success

From an SEO perspective, making sure your website appears in the search results is a top priority. This is called indexing. Sitemaps help your site to be crawled and indexed by search engines. There are two main types of sitemaps: HTML and XML.

  • HTML sitemaps are designed for humans, and are typically presented as a hierarchical list of links to all the pages on a website.
  • XML sitemaps are designed for search engines, and are typically written in a structured format that is easy for search engine crawlers to understand. XML sitemaps provide a list of all the URLs on a website, as well as additional information such as the last modified date and the priority of each page.

Why is sitemap.xml important?

Imagine your website is a city. The sitemap.xml is like a map of the city, showing where all of the important buildings are located. The search engine bots are like tourists who are trying to find their way around the city. Without the map, they might get lost or miss some of the important buildings.

Sitemap.xml is especially important for larger websites. It provides a quick way for robots to crawl the pages you want indexing.

How to create a sitemap.xml

You can use a dedicated sitemap generator tool, or you can create one manually. If you choose to create one manually, you can follow the guidelines provided by Google. Once you have created a sitemap.xml, you can submit it to Google Search Console. This will help Google to discover and index your website’s pages.

For large sites, you can create a sitemap index

A sitemap index is a file that lists the URLs of all of your sitemaps. This can be useful for large websites with many pages to help monitor and identify and fix indexing errors. One common use is for large ecommerce websites to submit URLs by products, categories, blogs etc

To create a sitemap index, you will need to create a text file that lists the URLs of all of your sitemaps. The file should be named sitemap_index.xml. Once you have created your sitemap index, you should submit it to Google Search Console.
